Ponsonby author Albert Wendt is set to release his newest novel in verse this month, a book he has spent his entire career writing.

Mr Wendt is renowned for his contribution to New Zealand and Pacific literature and began writing The Adventures of Vela in the late 1970s.

“I started the book near the beginning of my writing career and had many adventures myself in completing it,” says Mr Wendt.

“It’s a vast epic that moves from well before Christianity came into the Pa- cific, to the present-day.”

The Adventures of Vela follows the journey of an immortal songmaker, poet and chronicler.

Vela tells his story to a modern poet and the narrator of the book, Alapati.

The Delegate Assembly of the Modern Language Association elected Mr Wendt an honorary fellow in 2007.

Mr Wendt has contributed to seven novels, four collections of poetry, four collections of short stories, a play and numerous anthologies of New Zealand and Pacific literature.
