Impress your dinner guests
Visitors to the annual Auckland Food Show this week are set to have their tastebuds tickled while getting plenty of divine inspiration.
Chef and Dish magazine food editor Claire Aldous will be taking up her post for the fourth year in a row as the annual food lovers’ event kicks off again tomorrow evening.
On Sunday afternoon she’ll be presenting a halfhour show, Easy Entertaining, showcasing four simple recipes to impress dinner party guests.
She says the idea behind her demonstration is giving people ideas for dishes they can create up to three days ahead of time, that will stay looking and tasting good.
“For me that’s what people are looking for,” she says.
“Something they can prepare ahead of time.”
Claire will be showing guests how to make four dishes – avocado hummus, a grain salad, salmon with a lemon and herb topping and hazelnut and plumcake tarts for dessert.
She says giving people lots of flavour combinations and using seasonal ingredients are things she always tries to incorporate when creating recipes for Dish.
The Epsom resident was part of the team that started the successful food lovers’ magazine five years ago and is solely responsible for creating all the recipes and the dishes that appear in it.
Although she never had formal chef training, she says she’s cooked for as long as she can remember.
Living in London as an au pair on her first OE, she fell into the spotlight when the family chef suddenly left and she has never looked back.
Since returning home she has owned her own catering business and headed the cooking school at the former Epicurean Workshop in Newmarket, working with hundreds of overseas chefs.
“I learned a lot without even realising it,” she says.
Claire will also be presenting canapes alongside Australian Donna Hay, Simon Wright and Mikel Arriet Arruiz for the Food Show VIP evening tomorrow.
The food show runs from tomorrow until Sunday at the Auckland Showgrounds.
Tickets are available from www.foodshow.co.nz.
