Regis­tra­tion time for all sorts of dog

If you live in Auck­land city and have a labrador named Jess, you’re not alone.

Jess is the most pop­u­lar name among the 20,000 dogs that call Auck­land city home, with al­most 400 of them shar­ing the name, ac­cord­ing to statis­tics from the Auck­land City Coun­cil’s data­base of reg­is­tered dogs.

Close run­ners-up in the name stakes are Max, Bella, Jack, Molly and Os­car.

Then there’s the ones that pre­fer to stand out from the crowd – Spud the Mag­nif­i­cent, Ber­lios Ro­tunda Fancy Pup, and Coco Par­nell.

The statis­tics also show the most pop­u­lar breed of dog in the city is a labrador.

There are more than 1600 labradors in the city, and an­other 1300 labrador cross dogs.

The next most pop­u­lar breeds are stafford­shire ter­rier cross, jack rus­sell ter­rier, golden re­triever, ger­man shep­herd and poo­dle.

Auck­land City Coun­cil has re­leased the statis­tics to help re­mind dog own­ers they have un­til Fri­day to reg­is­ter their dogs at the early rate and to en­ter the draw for one of five $200 West­field vouch­ers.

Af­ter Fri­day own­ers will have to pay the higher regis­tra­tion fee and risk re­ceiv­ing a $300 fine.

Regis­tra­tion fees dif­fer de­pend­ing on the class of dog, whether it is neutered or spayed and whether the owner holds a dog owner li­cence.
