Budding writers are urged to sharpen their pencils and compete for $1500 worth of prizes in this year’s Western Districts Short Story Competition.

The annual contest draws entries from all over the region and is open to everyone. It includes categories for intermediate and secondary school pupils.

All manuscripts must be original and previously unpublished.

Entries close on October 10 and must not exceed 2000 words.

The overall winner will be flown to Auckland for the awards on November 6.

Accommodation will also be provided.

“Encouragement is the objective of the competition,” organiser David Knight says. “It is hoped that this competition will give writers an objective to achieve and improve their confidence to try other contests.”

Email wdssc@xtra. co.nz for information and details or send a stamped, self-addressed envelope to WDSSC, PO Box 83-065, Edmonton, Waitakere city.
