People are being encouraged to lean over their fence and get to know one another on Neighbours Day next month.

Lifewise, which is organising the day, hopes it will be a celebration of neighbourlinessandherald the creation of more supportive, healthy and connected communities across Auckland.

Lifewise community services general manager John McCarthy says the idea is modelled on similar initiatives in the United Kingdom, Europe and Australia.

The organisation is encouraging all Aucklanders to start with one action on one day to foster friendships in their street.

“Strong connections between neighbours create opportunities to make our neighbourhoods healthier, safer and more fun places to live,” he says.

Mr McCarthy says things like sharing a cuppa or hosting a neighbourhood barbecue are easy ways to get the ball rolling.
