A way to go

Con­grat­u­la­tions on a thought­pro­vok­ing and well writ­ten set of ar­ti­cles on racism a sen­si­tive and dif­fi­cult topic.

The range of feel­ing on this goes from “it’s not a prob­lem in New Zealand, mate” through to “racism is rife and it’s com­pletely hope­less”.

I can un­der­stand both ex­tremes but my view is in the mid­dle. We have come a long way but we still have a way to go.

I have only ever met a sin­gle per­son who is not racist to any ex­tent. This man is not racist, sex­ist, ageist or judge­men­tal in any way. I re­alised this when he was giv­ing me a ride and a car cut him off.

His re­sponse was to say some­thing along the lines of: “Blast that brown car.”

This was an eye-opener be­cause of­ten peo­ple re­spond with a racist or sex­ist com­ment. I have ob­served his be­hav­iour since and I’ve re­alised he never makes com­ments based on a per­son’s eth­nic­ity,
