An all-girls lacrosse team has two new titles to its name.
Mt Albert Grammar School girls team has won both the Auckland Secondary School Girls Lacrosse tournament and the National Secondary School Girls Lacrosse tournament. MAGs beat Western Springs College 4-1 in the Auckland tournament and won the national tournament 9-0 against Diocesan School.
Coach Josh Harvey says his team has been training together for around three years.
‘‘They’re an awesome bunch to train and the thing that made them stand out in the competition was their ability to play really well together as a team.’’
Auckland schools tournament organiser Kate McLain says the sport’s profile is slowly rising.
‘‘MAGS now have a really good girls’ side and hopefully that will encourage new players and those girls to continue playing,’’ Ms McLain says.
Mr Harvey says the sport is very popular at MAGS with further interest beyond their two full teams.
‘‘It’s the fastest growing sport in the United States so it would be great to see more of it over here.’’
Double win: The Mt Albert Grammar School girls’ lacrosse team A has won both the Auckland and national secondary school girls competitions.
