Festival showcases all things blokey

Auckland City Harbour News - - NEWS -

The ultimate in big boys’ toys will be on show at this year’s annual festival of all things blokey.

Entertainment expo Big Boys Toys returns for three action-packed days this weekend and among other things will have a couple of jet fighters on display to get visitors into the right spirit.

A Russian Mig21 and Polish Iskra will be centrestage at the Top Gun Fighter Jet Feature in the Manfred’s Man-Cave area. Visitors to the Fighter Jet Feature can pose for photos and view the world’s first jet fighter simulators.

The fighter jets are part of the private collection of businessman Manfred Bennett who began his collection after seeing an auction for the Mig21 on Trade Me in 2010.

Event director Sandra Beacham says the jets will be just the tip of a very manly iceberg.

‘‘This year’s show is absolutely going to turn heads,’’ she says.

‘‘With so much horsepower to see and action to watch, this will be the best expo of Big Boys Toys in years.’’

As well as the planes there will be super cars, demonstrations of extreme sports and a flight simulator.

She says the big drawcard will be Flyboard-X.

‘‘This incredible invention is a like pair of water jet pow- ered boots that allow the driver to be propelled high into the air and even underwater.’’

A special pool is being dug to demonstrate the FlyboardX at the ASB Showgrounds, its first public showing in New Zealand.

The Action Arena features three days of extreme action and big names in Freestyle Motocross, BMX, stunt car driving and wakeboarding will perform.

Another first at Big Boys Toys is the BMX Big Air feature with action-sports sensation Jed Mildon from Taupo.

A huge Megaramp is being built to propel top BMX riders high into the air, allowing them to pull off amazing tricks and stunts before landing on the other side.

Mr Mildon is a star of BMX who landed the world’s first triple back flip last year and became famous.

He will be joined on the ramp by the country’s other top riders and Australian legend Nick Cooper as they wow the crowd with their unbelievable tricks and flips.

Big Boys Toys runs from 10am till 6pm on November 9, 10 and 11 at the ASB Showgrounds in Greenlane.
