Kids on a high after challenge
A group of primary school kids have discovered arriving to class in a helicopter is a sure fire way to impress your friends.
The whole of Richmond Road School was told to ‘‘hold their hats’’ as they gathered in the playground to watch the Westpac rescue helicopter land in the field.
The aircraft delivered five school chums safely to ground – the top fundraisers for the Chopper Challenge.
The Chopper Challenge has been running since 2007 and sees rescue staff teaching youngsters fitness including stretcher drills.
Students then rally sponsorship for their six- week fitness challenge which culminates in a final fitness test.
Chloe Garcia raised the most money on behalf of Richmond Road School, raising about $490.
Her impressive effort gained her a place in the cockpit for the ride from Mechanics Bay to the school.
‘‘It was really fun, but at the beginning I was quite nervous,’’ she says.
‘‘I saw the school from the sky and it was really tiny.’’
After delivering the first batch of children to the school, the helicopter then returned to the bay taking another five fantastic fundraisers with it.
