Aussie eyes up beauty Queens
As Auckland welcomes back its gay pride parade the city’s ‘‘very queer beauty pageant’’ Queens of the Whole Universe may be taking centre stage across the ditch.
Artistic director Jonathan Smith is in talks with an organisation in Melbourne which is looking at using the light-hearted pageant as a fundraising event.
The event held its final New Zealand performance in July last year and raised more than $205,000 for Aids and HIV charities in the years since it began in 2004.
Mr Smith will direct the parody pageant for its first year before handing it over to the organisation on a nine-year contract.
‘‘I just feel so honoured and humbled that another city would consider picking it up. It was a huge event and I’m only just starting to realise now it’s over quite how big it was.’’
Mr Smith is hoping for the first pageant to be held on World Aids Day on December 1 this year.
