Special celebration for park bear affair

Auckland City Harbour News - - NEWS -

Teddy bears of all shapes and sizes will be flocking to Western Springs Park on Sunday.

The annual Teddy Bears’ Picnic is celebrating its 30th birthday with a day of free entertainment and some special performances to mark the milestone.

The Auckland event is the longest-running of its kind in the country.

Cornwall Park hosted the first picnic back in 1982 before the teddy bears packed up their picnic baskets for the Auckland Domain where they rolled out their blankets for more than 20 years.

It’s not quite the woods but the teddy bears feel right at home at the new lakeside park location, event director Sandra Beacham says.

‘‘It’s grown since it’s Auckland Domain days because here it’s way more accessible. It’s a fantastic location and an iconic park for Auckland families.’’

New Zealand’s Got Talent runner-up Jessie Hillel will be making a guest appearance at the event. The 11-year-old singer will be joined by Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan and Tinkerbell.

Magicians, face painters and snow tubing are some of the other delights on offer for the family day out.

Children under the age of 12 can travel free to the event on any Metrolink, LINK, GO West, Waka Pacific or North Star bus service if they bring a teddy bear along for the ride.

The event runs from 10am to 3pm.
