A great idea

Auckland City Harbour News - - LETTERS -

‘‘New Zealand Day’’, Auckland City Harbour News, February 1. Yes! What a great idea. And a possible best date for it would be to coincide with Matariki, to respect the first peoples of these islands.

And then, maybe we could celebrate and pay our respects to the multiracial, multicultural nation Aotearoa/New Zealand has since become.

Some events come to mind (in no particular order):

Eid al-Fitr, Muslim, end of Ramadam

Burns Night, or St Andrew’s Day, Scotland

Daebor Eum, Korean Great Full Moon Chinese New Year Easter and Christmas, Christian Diwali, Hindu St Patrick’s Day, Ireland. I’m sure there are more. I believe the Pacific Islands people who contribute so much to New Zealand’s quality have many celebrations for us all to share.

And then there are other sorts of category:

Women’s Suffrage Day (after all, New Zealand was the first) Children’s Day United Nation’s Day. So lets go for it. What’s wrong with a four-day working week?
