We have a New Zealand day, Auck­land City Har­bour News, Fe­bru­ary 1. It is Wai­tangi Day, held last week, Fe­bru­ary 6.

We have had this cel­e­bra­tion since 1840.

Of course, the Pakeha ma­jor­ity have not al­ways hon­oured the guar­an­tees they of­fered Maori landown­ers in the Treaty of Wai­tangi.

For­tu­nately, Maori have cour­te­ously con­tin­ued go­ing to law, rather than war, to get some com­pen­sa­tion for their con­fis­cated land.

We are who we are, and our coun­try is what it is, be­cause of our bi­cul­tural her­itage.
