Basic items needed by Samoan victims
It has been two months since Cyclone Evan hit Samoa and local residents are in need of basic supplies.
The Samoa Red Cross Society is appealing to the public to donate some much-needed resources for the community.
Appeal co-ordinator Robina Adamson says not everyone has clean water yet because this is a work in progress.
‘‘They are desperately seeking plastic-lidded pails, 15 to 20 litres so that the older children can carry them to get water for their families,’’ she says.
‘‘Without containers, water cannot be distributed to families in the worst-hit areas – without clean water people become ill.’’
Other items required include bottled water, clothes, blankets and tarpaulins for shelter.
Also needed are tool supplies to rebuild as well as hygiene kits which include two each of hand sanitiser, toilet soap, tooth brushes, toothpaste, hair combs, hand towels and toilet paper and one packet of sanitary pads.
For those who have offered a monetary donation Ms Adamson suggests spending the same value at the supermarket to buy some of the basic items required.
The appeal is ongoing and the container will not leave New Zealand until it is full.
