Five men were arrested on Saturday night after fleeing police in an allegedly stolen car and crashing it into another towing a boat. Police say the men were clocked travelling nearly 90kmh through Ponsonby – a 50kmh zone – in the evening. When a patrol car tried to pull over the driver he sped away along Jervois Rd, down College Hill, and past Victoria Park. Senior Sergeant Junior Abraham says police abandoned the pursuit near Jervois Rd when the car ran a red light. ‘‘Unfortunately a vehicle towing a boat has pulled out of Westhaven Marina and the car, coming along Beaumont St, has T-boned the car and boat. ‘‘It was quite an extensive crash,’’ Mr Abraham says. One of the men in the stolen car was trapped for a time with a broken leg. The four other passengers tried to run away, but were caught by police. The family with the boat were unhurt. All five offenders are appearing in court this week charged with offences including theft.
