Auck­land District Health Board is part of a pa­tient safety pro­gramme be­ing pi­loted. The Health Qual­ity and Safety Com­mis­sion says the pro­gramme aims to re­duce sur­gi­cal site in­fec­tions. Eight DHBs from Auck­land and Can­ter­bury will take part in the pi­lot be­fore the pro­gramme is rolled out na­tion­ally in July. The fo­cus for the first year of the pro­gramme will be on hip and knee surg­eries. Cur­rently 2 to 5 per cent of pa­tients un­der­go­ing surgery de­velop in­fec­tions. ‘‘Sur­gi­cal site in­fec­tions can have very se­ri­ous con­se­quences for both pa­tients and health ser­vices,’’ as­so­ciate health min­is­ter Jo Good­hew says.
