Auckland District Health Board is part of a patient safety programme being piloted. The Health Quality and Safety Commission says the programme aims to reduce surgical site infections. Eight DHBs from Auckland and Canterbury will take part in the pilot before the programme is rolled out nationally in July. The focus for the first year of the programme will be on hip and knee surgeries. Currently 2 to 5 per cent of patients undergoing surgery develop infections. ‘‘Surgical site infections can have very serious consequences for both patients and health services,’’ associate health minister Jo Goodhew says.
