Youngsters and their parents are celebrating Auckland Council’s plan to give all under-17 year olds free access to the city’s pools.

There were high fives and grins as Mayor Len Brown launched the scheme on Tuesday.

‘‘Swimming and spending summer at the beach is part of our lifestyle, so it’s important for Aucklanders to have water-safety skills,’’ Mr Brown says.

‘‘Free access to public pools is one way of giving our young people these skills, as well as an opportunity to take part in enjoyable physical activity,’’ he says.

Young people aged 16 and under will have free general admission to the council’s 22 pools.

Charges will still apply for additional facilities, including spas, saunas, steam rooms, special play equipment, diving boards and hydro-slides, and educational and exercise programmes.
