Birds for sale at display
Explosions of colour will be winging their way to South Auckland this Sunday.
Finches, budgies, canaries, quails, cockatiels and other small parrots will be on display.
The New Zealand Finch Breeders Association is having its annual sale and everyone is welcome to attend.
Many types of exotic birds are no longer seen at pet shops so the sale is a good opportunity to see and buy the colourful birds from the breeders themselves, committee member Dave Allen says.
‘‘Some birds are suitable for beginners in the hobby while others are more suitable for experienced bird breeders.
‘‘People can pick up tips on looking after their birds and what is needed for their care,’’ he says.
A seed supplier will be on site to help answer queries and the association invites people interested in the hobby to become members.
Some foreign finch species have become rare over the past decade because it has not been possible to import them into the country and successfully breeding some species can be difficult, Mr Allen says.
‘‘The association is keen for people holding such threatened species to breed them to ensure their ongoing survival in New Zealand he says.
The bird sale is from 9am to 11am at the Papatoetoe Town Hall on George St, Papatoetoe.
Blazing birds: The African fire finch will be one of the many birds on display at the sale.
