Living wage

Auckland City Harbour News - - LETTERS -

A recent 25c increase to the adult minimum wage, raising it to $13.75, inspires little celebration. Most of us know how inadequate this is when paying for any goods and services.

The Living Wage Aotearoa Campaign lobbied all local boards about the idea of Auckland Council paying a living wage ($18.40) to all staff. A living wage would provide employees and their families with the necessities of life.

Our Whau Local Board supported the living wage and also further investigation of its implications on the Auckland Council and the wider Auckland area.

I believe that working for fair pay is better than recommending that low income earners access central government income support to cover basic living costs.
