Luck of the draw for league squads
A top of the table clash in the third round of the Appliance Shed Fox Memorial Shield saw the Pt Chevalier Pirates locked in a draw with the Mangere East Hawks on Saturday.
An early penalty opportunity for the Hawks was unsuccessful after Eko Malu pulled it right.
It wasn’t until the 15th minute when Pt Chev spread it wide and Manu Ashford scored that points went on the scoreboard.
It was nearly two in two minutes when Ashford went close again but the staunch Mangere defence held him out and turned the ball over.
Good field position had the Hawks hard on attack, with Carlos Hotene managing to equal with a try under the posts.
Further tries came from Ken Maumalo who grabbed a double and hooker Terrence Phillips who had Mangere up 18-4 at halftime.
Coming out after the break, the Pirates scored first with Tavita Latu squeezing through the Hawks defence.
Within minutes the Pirates were back in the game when the ball was spread wide for Ash Harawira Naera to run in unopposed and make it 18-16 to the Hawks after an unsuccessful conversion.
Pt Chevalier took the lead when Harawira Naera grabbed a double.
The Mangere East Hawks looked to be tiring and with time ticking away the game was on the line until Lafu Feagaiga came raging off the bench. With seven minutes to go he gave the lead back to Mangere East.
The Pirates went on to break the Hawks defence from the kick-off and spread the ball to score out wide with just minutes left on the clock.
But a difficult conversion was missed and after time ran out the score remained 24-24.
Ponsonby also finished the weekend in a 37-37 draw with Eastern Suburbs in round two of the Alan McEvoy Memorial Shield on April 13.
Unbeaten: Mangere East Hawks’ James Dowie is tackled by Pt Chevalier Pirates player Jeremiah Pai.
