Dragon takes the stage
Just like the dragon in Margaret Mahy’s tale, The Dragon of an Ordinary Family has grown bigger.
The story has been adapted from the pages of a classic children’s book to the stage by playwright Tim Bray and is playing at the PumpHouse theatre in Takapuna until May 4.
It stars central Auckland actors Todd Emerson, Aaron Ward and Elizabeth Tierney and tells the tale of a pet dragon who enters the lives of an ordinary fam- ily. As the little dragon grows bigger and bigger it becomes clear to the family that dragons do not make ideal pets.
Mr Bray says he has loved bringing Margaret Mahy’s story to life.
‘‘Her writing is so beautiful and it’s a pleasure to work with this story which children love.
‘‘We like to think that we are doing our part in keeping her memory alive.’’
Children attending the performances can dress up to take part in the onstage costume parade at the start of each show. Workshops with drama and literature activities, backstage tours and a chance to meet the cast and director will also be held during the play’s run.
A gala opening performance will be held this Saturday at 5pm with a post-show function with giveaways and prize draws for children.
