Fire ban finally ends but care still needed
The rain has come and dampened the ground enough to warrant the lifting of the weeks long Auckland fire ban.
The ban ended on Monday night. Open air fires in rural areas still require a fire permit. There are no changes to other restrictions within the urban areas.
Auckland Council principal rural fire officer Bryan Cartelle says the return of rain to the region allowed for the change in status but he urges continued caution.
‘‘The forecast is for showers this weekend with increased winds so while the rainfall means relief in moisture conditions for grass and bracken, caution is still needed because the heavier vegetation is still very dry.
‘‘We’d also like to remind people that open burning is a land management tool and should be used appropriately.’’
