Roll up for Avondale ‘bowls on ice’
Auckland Curling is giving those curious about the sport the chance to put their skills to the test on the ice this weekend.
The club is hosting Have a Go sessions at 5.30pm and 7.30pm this Sunday at the Paradice Ice Rink, Avondale for people of all ages and abilities.
Curling is often referred to as ‘‘bowls on ice’’ and was reintroduced to the Winter Olympics in 1998.
Club president Al Langille says it’s easy to pick up the basics.
‘‘We can have you playing a game within an hour of getting on the ice. Curling is a great sport for absolutely everyone because it’s primarily based on skill rather than strength.’’
The club has players ranging from teenagers to seniors.
Budding curlers don’t need specialist gear, just warm clothing that you can stretch out in and clean, flat-soled shoes. All other equipment is supplied by the club.
The sessions, at 150 Lansford Cres, Avondale, cost $10 but this will be credited back to players who join the club following the evening.
