Backing provided whenever disaster strikes

Auckland City Harbour News - - NEWS -

Auckland mayor Len Brown is calling on businesses to give generously to build disaster readiness in the Pacific.

Mr Brown established the Mayoral Fund for the Pacific in the wake of Cyclone Evan, to enable corporate and community sponsors to support emergency preparedness and rebuilding in the Pacific.

He has now announced the Aucklanders making up the advisory committee which is to assess applications for grants from the fund.

They are Hamish Crooks (Cook Islands); John Kotoisuva (Fiji); Ikipa Tongatule (Niue); the Rev Elder Lucky Slade (Samoa); Sandra Alofivae (Samoa); Foai Foai (Tokelau); Jenny Salesa (Tonga); with skills-based appointments Sandra Kailahi and Lucy Laitinen.

‘‘Auckland is a major Pacific city and I know Aucklanders, whether they be Pasifika, Palagi or whatever, will want to assist communities in the islands that are so vulnerable to destructive weather events.

This fund is primarily about building community resilience over time, not emergency relief,’’ the mayor says.

‘‘When I convened an emergency forum immediately after Cyclone Evan late last year, we drew together council, government, NGO, church and community groups to discuss a coordinated response to cyclone damage in Samoa and Fiji.’’

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade is the lead agency for responses to emergencies at government level.

But after events like Evan, communities are desperate to help as well, Mr Brown says.

The fund will be administered independently by the Auckland Communities Foundation, working with the Advisory Committee. Committee members were selected for both their skills sets and to ensure a voice from each major Pacific nation.

Representatives from smaller nations will provide advice as required, he says.

‘‘Auckland Council will also look at ways to provide shortterm technical support in the form of staff hours and expertise in areas such as stormwater management, transport and urban planning if we receive requests to do so.’’
