Roller derby opens in furious fashion
Roller derby fans will be rolling up to Auckland Roller Derby’s clash against Christchurch’s Dead End Derby this weekend.
Auckland’s blue and white skaters are starting off the back of a stellar 2012 season where they finished unbeaten on New Zealand soil after 16 games.
Saturday’s game kicks off their season against Dead End Derby who will be coming out strong after two losses to Auckland last year.
Since landing in New Zealand in 2006, the fast and aggressive sport has gone from strength to strength.
Bouts are played by two teams of five players, each consisting of four blockers and a jammer. Points are scored whenever a jammer passes a member of the opposing team.
The game will be held on May 11 at the YMCA, 149 Greys Ave, central Auckland. Doors open at 6pm and the game starts at 7pm.
