Retrofit your home

Summer is over and homeowners should prepare their properties for winter.

Whether upgrading an existing home, or building a new one, homeowners can benefit from Auckland Council’s free home assessment from trained Eco Design advisers.

Advisers give independent advice on creating a healthy home and saving on household running costs.

The council is also providing financial assistance with the Retrofit Your Home programme. Householders can receive up to $5000 towards the cost of insulation and clean heating solutions. The first $1300 of insulation upgrades are free under the Government funded Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) Energywise subsidy.

Deputy Mayor Penny Hulse says about 400,000 homes in Auckland have no or inadequate insulation.

Since its launch in 2011, more than 5500 Auckland homes have taken part in the Retrofit programme.

A survey of homeowners using the Eco Design Service showed that 80 per cent made changes to their existing house or new house design after receiving the advice.

Repayments under the scheme are added to the homeowner’s rates bill over a nine-year period.
