No liquor store

Students living in the heart of central Auckland’s university housing zone will still have to walk a little further to buy alcohol with a proposed bottle store on Mount St not going ahead. Businessman Moueen Haddad of Jordan River Ltd had applied for a liquor licence in March to run an alcohol shop in the former convenience store at 11a Mount St, with trading hours of 9am to midnight, seven days a week, Auckland City Harbour News, March 27. An Auckland Council spokesman says Mr Haddad has withdrawn his application and did not proceed with the licensing process. The plans were met with strong opposition from the University of Auckland and AUT University who both filed objections. The bottle shop would have been surrounded by student accommodation and situated next door to a Muslim prayer hall.
