Club feels the heat in ar­son at­tack

A high-pro­file brothel ap­pears to be the vic­tim of an ar­son.

The fire ser­vice was called to the Pel­i­can Club in New­ton Rd, Eden Tce, at 5.20am on Wed­nes­day to deal with a blaze at the front en­trance.

‘‘It ap­pears ac­cel­er­ant has been thrown at the premises and set alight re­sult­ing in a small fire,’’ act­ing De­tec­tive Se­nior Sergeant Ja­son McIn­tosh, of Auck­land po­lice, says.

It’s un­der­stood peo­ple were evac­u­ated from the build­ing.

‘‘It was ex­tin­guished pretty quickly. The dam­age was min­i­mal,’’ se­nior fire risk man­ager Mike McE­naney says.

A spokesman for a neigh­bour­ing busi­ness says trou­ble at the club is rare.

‘‘It’s been there a long time, quite rep­utable,’’ he says.

Po­lice are re­view­ing CCTV footage.
