Club feels the heat in arson attack
A high-profile brothel appears to be the victim of an arson.
The fire service was called to the Pelican Club in Newton Rd, Eden Tce, at 5.20am on Wednesday to deal with a blaze at the front entrance.
‘‘It appears accelerant has been thrown at the premises and set alight resulting in a small fire,’’ acting Detective Senior Sergeant Jason McIntosh, of Auckland police, says.
It’s understood people were evacuated from the building.
‘‘It was extinguished pretty quickly. The damage was minimal,’’ senior fire risk manager Mike McEnaney says.
A spokesman for a neighbouring business says trouble at the club is rare.
‘‘It’s been there a long time, quite reputable,’’ he says.
Police are reviewing CCTV footage.
Anyone with information should contact Detective Sergeant Carl Lewens on 302 6471.
