Rules for domestic fires in Auckland:

A domestic fire must be operated without causing an excessive amount of smoke, nor have the smoke cross the property boundary. Only dry, untreated wood can be used. It is prohibited to use the fireplace inside your home to burn rubbish

Wood burners must comply with the NES and ACRP: ALW rules

A list of compliant wood burners is available from the Ministry for the Environment’s website

The type of domestic fire you can install depends on the size of your section/property and which air quality management area your property is in. For example, a property in the urban area on less that 2ha of land can only have a fire that has a particle emission rate of less than 1.5g/kg and a thermal efficiency of at least 65 per cent.
