Call for old phones

The Star­ship Foun­da­tion is call­ing on peo­ple to do­nate their old cell­phones so it can con­vert them to cash.

The Star­ship Mo­bile Phone Ap­peal is a prac­ti­cal and sim­ple way for peo­ple to get in­volved to ben­e­fit chil­dren and the en­vi­ron­ment, spokes­woman An­drea New­land says.

Dur­ing June par­tic­i­pants can re­quest a mo­bile phone col­lec­tion pack to be de­liv­ered to their work­place.

‘‘Ask staff in ad­vance to rum­mage through their draw­ers at home for old mo­bile phones they no longer need that can be do­nated to Star­ship. Rally the sup­port of friends and fam­ily too,’’ Ms New­land says.

Once the phones are col­lected they can be picked up or mailed to Star­ship. The phones then get as­sessed, graded and data cleansed.

Work­ing phones are shipped to Hong Kong where they are re­fur­bished and on-sold into emerg­ing mar­kets and non-work­ing phones are re­cy­cled in line with best en­vi­ron­men­tal prac­tice.

All prof­its go the Star­ship Foun­da­tion to sup­port the Star­ship National Air Am­bu­lance Ser­vice.
