City picked as stopover

Auckland City Harbour News - - NEWS -

Auckland has been confirmed as the halfway stopover port for the Global Ocean Race circumnavigation starting in the UK next year.

Nine teams from six countries are entered in the 30,000-mile roundthe-world race.

Mayor Len Brown says the stopover enhances Auckland’s repu- tation as one of the world’s yachting capitals.

The race starts from Southampton in September 2014 and finishes in Portsmouth in May 2015.

The fleet will stopover in Cape Town, Auckland, Punta del Este, Uruguay and Charleston, United States, before returning to Europe.
