New rules to keep an eye on ‘‘big brother’’ have been introduced. The Auckland Council has adopted new draft guidelines for the use of camera surveillance in public places. The guidelines provide a consistent approach to the appropriate use of camera systems in public places to help ensure public safety and reduce crime. The guidelines comply with the Privacy Act and are based on eight principles to ensure they meet high standards so people don’t feel they are being watched. ‘‘There are a lot of differing standards of technology and use of camera surveillance,’’ community policy and planning manager Anaru Vercoe says. ‘‘These provide a single set of guidelines to promote consistency and standards to improve public safety and respect people’s privacy rights.’’
