Western Springs almost pull it off

Auckland City Harbour News - - SPORT -

Western Springs AFC are proving they can give even football’s Oceania champions a run for their money.

The Northern Region Football League Second Division title-holders were held to a 1-0 defeat by Auckland City FC on September 19 after a second half strike by Darren White.

Auckland City were the better side for much of the contest but they had to overcome a Western Springs side eager to match them.

They almost produced a shock equaliser when Alec Beresford all but latched on to a near post cross with substitute goalkeeper Oliver Sail stranded.

It took Auckland City until after the interval to edge ahead after only a week of training.

Auckland City coach Ramon Tribulietx says it was good practice for the navy blues ahead of tonight’s pre-season friendly against Fijian giants Ba.

‘‘I thought Western Springs did very well, they did a lot of defending and they gave us a good game and that’s what we needed.’’
