Neigh­bours unite in an emer­gency

A se­ries of events this weekend will pro­mote the im­por­tance of be­ing pre­pared for an emer­gency.

Auck­land Civil De­fence, a di­vi­sion of Auck­land Coun­cil, is host­ing events on the theme of Know your neigh­bours, know your com­mu­nity.

Auck­lan­ders are be­ing urged to get to know their neigh­bours bet­ter.

‘‘This is a great re­minder to Auck­lan­ders about the im­por­tance of talk­ing with their neigh­bours about how they could help each other dur­ing a dis­as­ter,’’ Auck­land Civil De­fence con­troller Clive Man­ley says.

‘‘Dur­ing a dis­as­ter, emer­gency ser­vices will be heav­ily stretched. You could be on your own for three or more days and your most im­me­di­ate form of as­sis­tance will come from your neigh­bours and com­mu­nity.’’

Auck­land Civil De­fence is hold­ing events around the re­gion to raise aware­ness about how to pre­pare for an emer­gency.

Th­ese in­clude dis­plays at St Lukes West­field mall un­til Sun­day and weekend ac­tiv­i­ties at the Auck­land Mu­seum Vol­ca­noes ex­hi­bi­tion.
