Fi­nal­ist’s time to shine

Tal­ented young song­writ­ers and per­form­ers will bat­tle it out for the ti­tle of Uni­ver­sity of Auck­land’s Song­writer of the Year to­mor­row.

Cen­tral Auck­land song­writer Jamie Moana is among the five fi­nal­ists and emerg­ing artists study­ing pop­u­lar mu­sic at the uni­ver­sity who won their place af­ter the semi­fi­nals in July.

Judges, in­clud­ing es­tab­lished song­writ­ers and mu­sic in­dus­try rep­re­sen­ta­tives, will se­lect the win­ners across the cat­e­gories.

The con­tes­tants will per­form two orig­i­nal songs in front of an au­di­ence at Maid­ment The­atre.

Five new awards will be up for grabs this year for best vo­cal­ist, lyri­cist, in­stru­men­tal­ist, ar­ranger and song.

The win­ner of Song­writer of the Year will win a pro­fes­sion­ally pro­duced, recorded and mas­tered sin­gle cour­tesy of Round­head Stu­dio, Kog Stu­dio and pro­ducer God­frey de Grut.

Ruby Walsh, who took the Supreme Award at the Se­condary Schools Na­tional Song­writer Awards held in Au­gust, will also make a guest per­for­mance.

The night kicks off at 7pm at the Maid­ment The­atre, 8 Al­bert St.
