Dame Malvina’s 60th anniversary
Dame Malvina Major will wind up her Diamond Jubilee Celebration Tour 2014 with a performance in Auckland.
The world–renowned soprano will join special guests Geoff Sewell, the Hamilton County Bluegrass Band, Hogsnort Rupert and the RNZ Air Force & Navy Bands for six outdoor summer shows in February and March.
The final one will be at the Ellerslie Racing Club on March 15.
Next year Dame Malvina Major will be celebrating 60 years as one of the world’s top opera singers.
Her role developing artists like Hayley Westenra via the Dame Malvina Major Foundation has seen her come full circle from the early days where she received classical lessons from Dame Sister Mary Leo and later, Ruth Packer from the Royal College of Music.
In 1963 Dame Malvina won the NZ Mobil Song Quest, in 1965 the Australian Melbourne SunAria, and in 1966, the prestigious Londonbased Kathleen Ferrier Award.
She has performed in more than 30 operas, recorded numerous albums and performed internationally at the pyramids in Egypt with the Cairo Symphony Orchestra, and more.
In 1991 Dame Malvina won the New Zealand Entertainer of the Year and in 1998 was awarded the Benny, The Variety Club of New Zealand’s highest lifetime achievement award.
She has received Honorary Doctorates from both Waikato and Massey universities.
