Dame Malv­ina’s 60th an­niver­sary

Dame Malv­ina Ma­jor will wind up her Di­a­mond Ju­bilee Cel­e­bra­tion Tour 2014 with a per­for­mance in Auck­land.

The world–renowned so­prano will join spe­cial guests Ge­off Sewell, the Hamil­ton County Blue­grass Band, Hogsnort Ru­pert and the RNZ Air Force & Navy Bands for six out­door sum­mer shows in Fe­bru­ary and March.

The fi­nal one will be at the Eller­slie Rac­ing Club on March 15.

Next year Dame Malv­ina Ma­jor will be cel­e­brat­ing 60 years as one of the world’s top opera singers.

Her role de­vel­op­ing artists like Hay­ley Westenra via the Dame Malv­ina Ma­jor Foun­da­tion has seen her come full cir­cle from the early days where she re­ceived clas­si­cal lessons from Dame Sis­ter Mary Leo and later, Ruth Packer from the Royal Col­lege of Mu­sic.

In 1963 Dame Malv­ina won the NZ Mo­bil Song Quest, in 1965 the Aus­tralian Mel­bourne SunAria, and in 1966, the pres­ti­gious Lon­don­based Kath­leen Fer­rier Award.

She has per­formed in more than 30 op­eras, recorded nu­mer­ous al­bums and per­formed in­ter­na­tion­ally at the pyra­mids in Egypt with the Cairo Sym­phony Orches­tra, and more.

In 1991 Dame Malv­ina won the New Zealand En­ter­tainer of the Year and in 1998 was awarded the Benny, The Va­ri­ety Club of New Zealand’s high­est life­time achieve­ment award.

She has re­ceived Hon­orary Doc­tor­ates from both Waikato and Massey uni­ver­si­ties.
