Bird call goes out to voters
Some of New Zealand’s famous faces are going in to bat for their favourite feathered friends.
Radio broadcaster Hayley Holt, singer Barnaby Weir and United Future leader Peter Dunne are a few of the Kiwis who will be advocating for their favourite native bird in this year’s Bird of the Year poll.
The poll, which is run by Forest & Bird, is in its ninth year.
Advocacy manager Kevin Hackwell says the passionately contested poll raises the profile of the country’s bird species.
‘‘As well as underlining the quirks of our native birds, the poll helps to highlight some of the threats they face,’’ he says.
The polls are open until 5pm, October 28.
