Weightlifers break records

Auckland City Harbour News - - SPORT -

A five strong weightlifting team is breaking records on the national circuit.

The athletes, from the central Auckland Youthtown barbell team, brought home an impressive swag of medals, breaking 16 Auckland records and one New Zealand record at the NZ Raw National Championships held in Christchurch from September 28 to 29.

Lynn Le and John Duran both won gold medals, with Duran the current New Zealand under59 kilogram record holder.

Mt Albert athletes Vivianne Teh and Bert Ruiz won silver and bronze respectively, while Mendrado Catoto placed fourth. Youthtown was once well-known for producing weightlifting champions in the 1980s, including Commonwealth gold medallist Darren Liddel.

None of the team had been involved in the sport before until starting their training with fitness instructor Dominique Basabas just 12 months ago.

All five have qualified to represent New Zealand at the Oceania Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships in Auckland in December.
