Bank robber fails to nail it
A man who allegedly tried to rob an ANZ bank didn’t get far before being caught.
Police say the man went into the Ponsonby Rd branch at about 9.15am on Tuesday with a hammer and demanded cash.
He left the bank when the teller went to confer with her manager, Avondale Detective Sergeant Mike Williams says.
The unsuccessful robber got away with nothing and was caught a short time afterwards on nearby Arthur St.
A police officer on the street spotted a man matching the robber’s description and was able to snap a picture and send it to colleagues at the bank to compare with CCTV footage.
The man appeared in the Auckland District Court on Wednesday to face a charge of demanding with intent to steal.
