Whale rescue charity Project Jonah celebrates its 40th anniversary next month with A Whale of a Time – a dinner and auction.

The group has saved hundreds of whales and trained thousands of volunteers.

‘‘We were formed when a group of like-minded people got together and wanted to see whales and dolphins protected from hunting,’’ general manager Daren Grover says.

‘‘From meeting in kitchens to marching on Parliament, Project Jonah has always been a grass-roots charity – able to do a lot with a little.’’

Mr Grover says vital funds are needed to continue the work.

A Whale of a Time is on at the Floating Pavilion in the Viaduct Harbour on November 14.

Comedian Ewen ‘The Westie’ Gilmour is the MC and entertainment will be from e singer Talia Dickinson and guitar virtuoso Reon Robati will entertain.

Tickets are $125 per person or $1200 for a table of 10 and are available at project jonah.org.nz or event finder.co.nz.
