VILLAGE STILL ‘IDEAS AND CONCEPTS’

Auckland City Harbour News - - FRONT PAGE -

The Lesbian Elders Village project aims to establish a community for lesbians during the second half of their lives.

Secretary Ricky Schamall says the idea came from a woman named Arafelle One whose partner had Alzheimer’s disease and had to be put into care.

‘‘It was a tough experience for both of them. She experienced all sorts of things, beginning from not being the official next-ofkin for her partner,’’ Ms Schamall says.

‘‘Arafelle thought it would have been great if she had the opportunity to keep her partner closer to her, not in a state facility, so she could care for her with friends and the help of carers.’’

The village proposal is ‘‘ideas and concepts, rather than bricks and mortar’’, but the goal is to have a property with apartmentstyle living, shared gardens and community buildings.

It is also hoped there will be facility for a medical centre.

The project is on hold for the moment until more women give their support.
