Copelia to open season
The Royal New Zealand Ballet has announced its 2014 season.
It will open in January with performances in Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Minneapolis and New York.
There will be three New Zealand tours, with 61 performances.
The New Zealand season opens with Coppelia and will be followed by a mixed programme of short ballets.
Allegro: Five Short Ballets will include works by ballet great George Balanchine, Johan Kobborg, Larry Keigwin and the world premiere of a new work by New Zealand choreographer Daniel Belton.
It will have its opening night in Auckland on July 30. The season will end with the Vodafone season of A Christmas Carol.
‘‘Having just celebrated the RNZB’s first 60 years in 2013, the 2014 season has the company looking forward to the next 60,’’ artistic director Ethan Stiefel says.
The company’s last tour of 2013 kicks off in Wellington this week and takes in 47 centres nationwide.
