The ASB Theatre and Ponsonby’s Mackelvie St Shopping Precinct have been recognised at the 2013 Auckland Architecture Awards.

The best of Auckland’s architectural work, from residential and commercial to public and school buildings, was celebrated last week.

The winning shopping site between Pollen and Mack- elvie streets with frontages on Ponsonby Rd, owned by Samson Corporation, was designed by RTA Studio.

The buildings reference the Victorian and Edwardian shops in the neighbourhood, the judges say.

RTA Studio director Rich Naish says it is satisfying to see the building recognised locally and globally.

‘‘We set out to make a building that felt comfortable in the context of Ponsonby’s history, the now and the future,’’ he says.

Archoffice won an award for its major work on the Aotea Centre’s ASB Theatre refurbishment.

The two-year, $15 million renovation project was completed in April.
