Quality Chinese medicine
The New Zealand College of Chinese Medicine in Greenlane offers a popular service to the community through its student clinic.
The College is fast becoming the premier venue for high quality Chinese medical education in New Zealand. It has been able to achieve this through integration of rigorous classroom teaching with outpatient clinics, which give students real world experience in a supervised learning environment.
The student outpatient clinic provides services treating a wide range of health issues. Both acupuncture and herbal medicine treatments are available to the general public, providing low cost access to these services.
Senior students in years 3 and 4 of their Bachelor of Health Science degrees provide patient services under qualified practitioner supervision. The College only employs highly regarded Chinese medical practitioners, who ensure that all sessions are conducted professionally and with utmost care.
Senior student Elise Beer says she has provided patient treatments for a wide range of conditions with success.
Elise, like many of the students in her cohort has come to Chinese medicine after previously being involved in other areas of study or employment. She initially trained as a documentary photographer and has worked in the health industry in various roles.
For Elise the most satisfying aspect of clinical work is engaging with people in the community and providing a unique healthcare plan for each client. Her goal on graduation is to eventually set up an affordable community health centre specialising in complimentary natural therapies.
Acupuncture and herbal clinic sessions are also priced at $10 per session, with an additional charge for any herbs bought. These prices are a significant saving on Chinese medical services provided within the private sector.
