Team earns place in cham­pi­onships

Western Springs AFC have earned them­selves a place in next year’s an­nual Napier U-19 Cham­pi­onship foot­ball draw.

The cen­tral Auck­land side won the Satel­lite Tour­na­ment in con­vinc­ing fash­ion over Up­per Hutt City on Mon­day.

They were ruth­less in their pur­suit of glory, see­ing off Marist Napier, Mata­mata Swifts, North Welling­ton, Metro and Tau­ranga City United in group play be­fore ham­mer­ing Water­side Karori 4-0 in their semi­fi­nal.

Up­per Hutt were no match for ‘‘The Hoops’’ in the fi­nal go­ing down 3-1 to their op­po­nents.

In women’s league ac­tion, the Auck­land Foot­ball squad edged Waikato-Bay of Plenty 1-0 in a dour en­counter on Sun­day.

The con­test was set­tled 12 min­utes from time by a well-taken Steph Trow­ill goal, the sub­sti­tute hav­ing been set up by Han­nah Kraak­man.

Auck­land head to Christchurch to take on Main­land Pride this Sun­day.
