Reward goes out
There’s a price on the head of one of the world’s most invasive birds.
The Department of Conservation is offering a $300 reward for information that leads to the capture of the red-vented bulbul.
Department spokeswoman Liz Brooks says it’s believed there are at least five of the birds in Auckland and they probably arrived by ship or yacht.
Red-vented bulbuls are confirmed to be lurking in the Manurewa/ Alfriston area.
They threaten native birds and fruit and vegetable crops and are listed as an unwanted organism under the Biosecurity Act 1993.
Ms Brooks says the payout is available until November 10.
It will go to the person who provides the first sighting report that leads directly to a successful capture by the response team.
Keep an eye out for a bird about the size of a starling with a black head, grey-white belly and distinctive crimsonred patch underneath its tail.
