Country’s best cafes compete
Ponsonby cafe Bambina is in the running to become New Zealand’s top cafe.
The establishment is one of three Auckland eateries in the final of the 2013 NZ Cafe of the Year Awards, as voted by customers.
It is now up to the judges to choose the overall winner from the 18 finalists across six regions. Consistency is a key criteria so cafes could be visited more than once by under cover judges.
Paper Moon in Mairangi Bay and Mt Eden’s Circus Circus are the other Auckland entries.
The competition is now in its second year and attracted votes from more than 45,000 people nationwide.
The winner is announced in early December and its owners drive away in a Fiat 500S.
Head judge Kerry Tyack says judges are ‘‘hugely impressed’’ by the record number of entries.
‘‘Cafe culture is thriving in large measures because of the discernment and expectations of coffee and tea lovers.’’
