Football teams hope to step up their game

After a disappointing round for Auckland Football’s women’s side and the Young Ferns both teams will be looking to step up their game this weekend.

Auckland Football found themselves on the wrong end of a 2-1 defeat at Mainland Pride in ASB Women’s League action on Sunday.

Becky Hawker’s goal for the visitors at Christchurch’s ASB Park equalised Aimee Phillips’ 14th minute goal for Mainland.

The South Island outfit’s winning goal came from an unlikely source with Auckland goalkeeper Rebecca Rolls putting it through her own net five minutes into the second half while attempting to clear a wayward backpass.

New Zealand’s Young Ferns also found themselves on the wrong end of the scoreline at Parrs Park.

A goal from Three Kings United star Martine Puketapu just after the halfhour mark couldn’t halt a 3-1 defeat by Central Football.

Auckland entertain reigning champions Northern Football at William Green Domain from 1pm this Sunday, while the Young Ferns take on Capital Football in Wellington.
