Substation switched on

A new inner city substation will provide the infrastructure to deal with Auckland’s projected population boom, power distribution company Vector says.

The 220 kV Hobson St Substation was opened last week to house both Vector and Transpower equipment providing electricity to the central city.

A tunnel and four new buildings were built to house both company’s substations.

The project puts in place key foundations for Auckland’s future growth, Vector chief executive Simon Mackenzie says.

‘‘This project means we have the infrastructure in place to deal with a projected population of almost two million people by 2031,’’ he says.

The Hobson St Substation will connect to Transpower’s larger North Auckland and Northland project due for completion early next year, creating a transmission ring around Auckland and across the Harbour Bridge to supply electricity north.
