Record 17,000 go for run in the sun

A record 17,000 com­peti­tors got out in the Auck­land sun­shine on Sun­day to take part in the adi­das Auck­land Marathon.

Kick­ing off in Devon­port, run­ners of all lev­els joined in, with some com­plet­ing a full marathon and oth­ers tak­ing part in a 5 kilo­me­tre walk.

The race fin­ished at Vic­to­ria Park, where run­ners were greeted by crowds of sup­port­ers, plenty of wa­ter and a sausage siz­zle.

Ti­maru’s Sa­muel Wre­ford was the first to com­plete the full marathon.

He did it in a time of two hours and 18 min­utes.


The win­ner: Sam Wre­ford runs over the Auck­land Har­bour Bridge dur­ing the adi­das Auck­land Marathon on Sun­day.
